Communities, farms/ranches, worksites, and other sites in bear country should employ the use of bear proof garbage collection methods, and safely dispose of or incinerate waste. Managing garbage and avoiding garbage conditioning bears is a key strategy at preventing habituation and eventual problems with either bear aggression or bear health. This golden rule must be applied by municipalities, landowners, worksites, and wilderness users. The best way to avoid an encounter is to decrease available food sources for the hungry bruins. In this article we will discuss how to decrease bear-human interactions both in populated areas and in the wilderness. Avoiding an encounter with a bear seems an obvious way to prevent a dangerous encounter, but is often overlooked while people settle on firearms and/or repellants as a solution.
